Episode 38: Unbreakable Ass 2

The guys throw on superhero tights for the final time this summer as they review “Kick Ass 2”. For Does It Hold Up, they revisit M. Night Shyamalan’s sophomore effort “Unbreakable”. What would happen if superheroes actually existed? They’d probably subscribe to FOM, for starters…

    Kick-Ass 2
    3 Mux Movie

    1 for Night Bitch’s tits
1 for that cheerleader audition dance
1 for sticking to the parameters of a Comic Book Movie.

Using Rob’s metric for defining how well done Pacific Rim was, mainly, using the director’s intention as the scale by which to judge the end result, I would say this was a success. And what is a Comic Book Movie? It’s different than a Super Hero Movie, and not quite a Movie Based On A Graphic Novel. I would say that Man of Steel is a Super Hero Movie, Superman (1978) is a Comic Book Movie (using the original Superman comics as its inspiration and guiding light for its tone and style), The Dark Knight Trilogy is a Movie Based On A Graphic Novel.
Did Kick-Ass 2 live up to its predecessor? I don’t know, and I don’t care. I’m not judging this effort based on the last. What I have in front of me is a campy but realistic* approach to telling a story inspired by the pages of a comic book.
The realism was also greatly appreciated. In The Wolverine, Logan slashes through 50 bad guys without a drop of blood being shown. In Man of Steel, literally hundreds of thousands of innocent bystanders are killed in the course of the film. In Kick-Ass 2, when a hand is cut off, it bleeds. A lot. As it should. I was actually shocked when Kick-Ass’ father was killed, but that’s probably what crazy bad guys would do.

    So yes, 3 Mux Movie.
